Base31, the recently revitalized air force base turned arts and entertainment centre, is making waves in Prince Edward County. Once primarily known for its wineries, the region has now become a hub for new drinking and dining establishments and a burgeoning boutique hotel scene, featuring properties like The Royal and Merrill House. Base31 is adding to this transformation by introducing big-name concerts to the mix.
Now in its third year of performances on-site, Base31 boasts two venues with year-round programming: the Sergeants Mess Hall and the Drill Hall, a larger concert space.
The newest addition to Base31's culinary offerings, The Commissary is set to open this June and will regularly feature live music performances. Justin Rutledge will be leading the entertainment charge during Après Beach hours from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
In June, Base31 has some exciting events lined up. Tokyo Police Club will make a stop in Picton for their farewell tour on Saturday, June 15, followed by Matthew Good and his band on the next Saturday, June 22nd.
The month will conclude with Base31's first-ever Country Music Festival, aptly named the Pretty Excellent Country Music Festival. Headliners include multi-award-winning duo High Valley on June 28 and acclaimed brother-sister duo The Reklaws on June 29, with more artists to be announced in the coming weeks.
Part of Loud & Proud In The County, a collective of queer-owned and allied arts and entertainment businesses, Base31 is hosting a series of events to celebrate Pride. The weekend starts on Thursday, June 6 with Gay AF Comedy. Two-spirit singer-songwriter and Juno award nominee Shawnee Kish performs on Friday June 7 while Carole Pope headlines on Saturday night. The weekend culminates with the 555 x Base31 Annual Pride Party featuring live DJ beats and drinks from local producers, Stock & Row on Sunday night.
