New Zealand is known for its action and adventure experiences, and on my journey around the country, it delivers. From hiking and paragliding to white water rafting and underground ziplining, there's no shortage of adrenaline-packed excursions. Exploring Lake Taupō, New Zealand's largest lake, is a welcome change of pace to catch your breath for an afternoon.

The journey starts by boarding the Ernest Kemp, an adorably humble vintage steamboat. That's where you'll meet your skippers — enthusiastic locals able to answer every question you might have. Complimentary coffee and snacks are welcome as the Kemp powers into the lake and the chilly winds pick up.

With breathtaking mountain vistas as the backdrop — Mount Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings) and Tongariro — the Ernest Kemp chugs along the sparkling, blue waters of Lake Taupō as the guides share facts about the area, crack jokes and answer questions over a loudspeaker.

Maori rock carvings

Then, you reach the main event — the breathtaking Māori carvings, etched directly into a rock face that's only accessible by water. Created by Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell in the late 1970s, the 14-foot-tall artwork honours Ngātoroirangi, an ancestor of the Te Arawa and Tūwharetoa iwi.

There are plenty of photo opportunities to pose with the stunning carvings. In the summer months, you'll also have the chance to take a dip in Lake Taupō's calm waters before heading back to shore on the Ernest Kemp.

The sightseeing tour lasts about two hours, and is one of the best things to do in Taupō. Afterwards, grab a fresh seafood lunch, visit the famous Hot Water Beach, or head out on a jet boat tour to continue your New Zealand adventure.
