The Vibe

Algonquin Resort is such a well-known landmark in St. Andrews, New Brunswick that it’s one of the first images to show up in Google searches of the town. Canada’s first seaside resort, the property’s Tudor-style half-timbered facade has overlooked St. Andrews for almost 130 years.

The resort’s heritage is evident throughout in the form of antique furniture and black-and-white photographs of the property over the decades. Features like an inviting living-room-style lobby and relaxed fire pits on the lawn give the property an easy-going, cottage-like feel. The result is an ambiance that’s high-end but never stuffy.

The Rooms

Rooms pay homage to the hotel’s heritage, while still feeling fresh and modern. Furniture and linens in neutral colours like taupe and olive create an understated backdrop for grand upholstered headboards and vintage map artwork. Bathrooms are bright and contemporary, with lighted makeup mirrors, granite countertops and glass-walled showers.

We stayed in a Queen Room, the most basic room category, which are a snug 275 to 350 square feet – although this is understandable given the hotel’s room configurations have remained unchanged since the 1880s. Like all room categories, Queen Rooms include wooden work desks, free WiFi and flat-screen TVs. Upper level room categories add extras like balconies, views of Passamaquoddy Bay, kitchenettes or even separate living areas.

The Features

The Algonquin’s 18-hole golf course is its pièce de résistance, regularly ranked among the best in Canada and offering stellar seaside views. There’s an indoor pool with a three-story water slide (the latter is geared toward kids, but we won’t judge if you decide to have a go on it), as well as a seasonal outdoor pool with a whirlpool that’s open in the warmer months.

The Aveda spa offers the standard relaxing array of massages, facials and therapies, and also includes a fitness center. Braxton’s Restaurant, named for one of the Algonquin’s earliest chefs, serves upscale meat and fish entrees like scallop risotto and filet mignon with serene views of the property’s well-manicured grounds. Neighbouring Braxton’s Lounge offers more casual fare and a cozy, pub-like atmosphere.

The Location

Algonquin Resort has long been the flagship property of St. Andrews, a cute coastal town about an hour’s drive from Saint John, New Brunswick and its airport. It’s around a 10-minute walk to the town’s waterfront area, where you’ll find quaint restaurants, shops and cafes, along with attractions like the lovely Kingsbrae Garden. The resort offers free shuttle service for those who don’t feel like walking or free bike rentals are also available.
