Two new stages of air travel regulations have been released by the Canadian Transportation Agency that establish clear guidelines for airlines to follow in the event of flight delays and cancellations.
The CTA hopes that the new guidelines will help airlines become more accountable to their passengers.
The first stage takes effect on July 15, 2019, followed by a second roll-out on December 15.
The first stage of rules outlines that airlines need to communicate with passengers about flight delays and cancellations in a clear and simple way.
Under the new regulations, airlines will be required to provide compensation of up to $2,400 when bumping passengers from a flight if the reason is within their control. They will also have to provide compensation of up to $2,100 for lost or stolen baggage, including a full refund of any baggage fees.
Passengers will be allowed to leave the plane for tarmac delays that last longer than three hours when there is no prospect of immediate takeoff.
