This month, Global Affairs Canada issued a warning for Canadians travelling within the U.K. to “exercise a high degree of caution” in light of tensions surrounding Brexit. The second of four risk levels, the advisory indicates that some safety and security concerns have been identified. Canadians are being instructed to stay aware of local media developments and follow any instructions given by authorities in the U.K.
Brexit, short for “British exit” is the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union. In 2016 nearly 52 per cent of the U.K. voted to leave, but the actual withdrawal continues to be delayed. The warning comes after British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal was rejected by parliament for the third time. Plans to celebrate by Brexit supporters were abandoned, and many took to the streets to protest instead. Due to violent confrontations during these demonstrations, the Canadian Government is urging Canadians to avoid protest areas.
The EU leaders and the U.K. government have agreed to a “flexible extension” of the Brexit deadline until Oct. 31. This provides an additional six months for the U.K. to find the best possible solution, says Donald Tusk, president of the European Council.
