When you think of Japan’s natural beauty, cherry blossoms are probably the annual phenomenon that comes to mind; but summers bring an equally Instagrammable display of Mother Nature’s beauty. The towns of Furano and Biei in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture, burst into a Crayola box of colours when their flower fields bloom, attracting millions of travellers from across the globe.
The lavender fields are among the biggest draw, with many farms in the region also selling lavender-flavoured treats like cheesecake, ice cream and macarons. The lavender typically peaks between mid-July and early August, but other flowers remain in bloom as late as October, with lilies, cosmos, salvias and sunflowers keeping the fields colourful into early autumn.
Flower fields are dotted throughout Furano and Biei and public transportation in the area is minimal. It’s best to either rent a car or hop on one of the sightseeing buses making the rounds to the area’s most famous farms.
