If you lined up to see the Mona Lisa last year, you weren't the only one. The Louvre took the title of the world’s most visited museum in 2017, according to an annual study carried out by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and the engineering firm, AECOM.
The renowned Paris museum returned to the top spot with over 8 million visitors in 2017, after winning four years in a row before coming in third to the National Museum of China in Beijing and Washington's National Air and Space Museum in 2016. The museum’s boost in attendance for 2017 is partially credited to its showing last year of "Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting". This landmark exhibition featured almost 70 works by Johannes Vermeer and other acclaimed Dutch Golden Age painters. The study also showed that museums around the world saw a slight uptick in attendance in 2017, with a 0.2 per cent overall increase in visitor numbers.
