After numerous delays, the Louvre Abu Dhabi finally opened its doors on November 11th, 2017. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the domed structure is located in the cultural district of Saadiyat Island. It’s the first of several prominent cultural institutions planned to open on the island, with a Guggenheim Museum and a United Arab Emirates history museum set to join it soon.
The museum’s 23 permanent galleries house over 600 exhibits, including collections from Central Asia and over 300 artworks on loan from esteemed French museums. One of its inaugural exhibitions, “From One Louvre to Another”, covers the history of the original Louvre from its Versailles collections to the museum’s modern iteration.
