Denmark inaugurates its fifth national park this week, a 26,250-hectare expanse of nature that will be known as Kongernes Nordsjælland (Kings of North Zealand) National Park. Kings of North Zealand will be Denmark’s second-largest national park and will encompass Gribskov, one of the country’s biggest forests. The park will also cover swaths of farmland and beaches, plus lakes and other forests.
A hub of both nature and culture, the park is home to the remains of several historic castles and religious sites, such as 10th-century Esrum Abbey. Located west of Copenhagen, Kings of North Zealand is accessible from several bordering towns, including Helsingør and Hillerød.
