Although seasonal ice hotels are now constructed annually in cold destinations across the globe, from Quebec to Japan, this quirky concept was pioneered in Sweden, where the first ice hotel opened in 1989.

Situated in the small northern village of Jukkasjärvi, Sweden’s Icehotel is constructed out of 1,000 tonnes of “snice” – a snow and ice combination that has a higher density than regular ice.

Back for its 28th season, this year's Icehotel features one-off designs from 28 artists around the globe. Visitors can admire ice leaf motifs from Swedish designers Nina and Johan Kauppi and furniture designed by Marjolein Vonk (Netherlands) and Maurizio Perron (Italy) among its 50-plus suites and snow rooms.
