Room Service: Renaissance Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh, PA
A prime downtown location and a smart aesthetic that blends historic architectural details with modern decor make the Renaissance an appealing base for exploring Pittsburgh.
First constructed as an office tower in 1906, the Fulton Building has seen many lives over the years: as a World War II Veteran’s hospital, trade school and even a nightclub in the 1980s. Since 2001, its latest and current iteration is as the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel. The property pays homage to its history by retaining many of its original architectural features including a stunning rotunda over the main lobby. The dome is comprised of fish scale-like window panes that were previously covered in decades of coal dust and grime before being restored.
The Renaissance’s 300 guest rooms have the updated aesthetic you’d expect from a higher-end hotel group. We stayed in a simple yet modern King room that was well equipped for a weekend away or a business trip. It’s definitely worth the upgrade to a room facing the Allegheny River, with views of Pittsburgh’s iconic Three Sisters bridges.
Streetside dining, Pittsburgh’s answer to Toronto’s popular patio scene, is just beginning to gain traction in the city. Adjacent to the Renaissance’s main entrance, Braddock’s Bar is one of the few spots in downtown Pittsburgh to indulge in open-air tipples with a front face that fully opens up to the street in warm weather. The hotel has become a popular spot for events, such as weddings, in its riverview ballroom.
Situated in downtown Pittsburgh, there’s plenty to see and do within walking distance from the Renaissance. In the immediate vicinity you’ll find excellent theatres and cultural landmarks such as Heinz Hall to catch Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performances or musicals at the Benedum Center. Just across the river lies PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates (most riverview suites allow guests to watch the outfield action from their hotel rooms), and the city’s treasured Andy Warhol Museum.
