The Vibe

This small-town, themed hotel is an attraction in itself. Upon first arriving at Adventure Suites, you’ll already see that this isn’t your average accommodation. From the outside, the hotel’s façade features more than ten little buildings, all squished together to resemble the set of an old western movie. Inside, a Victorian-style lobby continues the fantasy feel.

Originally constructed in the 1950’s, Adventure Suites is laid out in the classic motel style. All of the rooms back onto one long hallway for access from the lobby, and have a door that leads directly outside. A few facelifts have seen the property transformed over the years, from the original Cross Country Motel to the over-the-top themed hotel that it is today.

The Rooms

Each room plays off a different theme, from tamer options like “New York City penthouse” and “Victorian spa” to the wackier “tree house” and “disco club” rooms.

We stayed in the “haunted castle,” a three-level suite designed to be a mishmash of a gothic mansion, a fairy tale palace and a defunct insane asylum. On top of all that, the room’s accoutrements include just about everything you would find in a Halloween superstore.

But the scary factor doesn’t stop at the eerie décor. A full-blown haunting simulation keeps you on edge for the duration of your stay. Moving objects, astral projections (literally projected onto the walls) and flickering lights are accompanied by a soundtrack that includes wind blowing, breathing, screaming, thunder claps and a voice that whispers “I see you” while you’re in the bathroom.

Luckily, it sleeps up to 18 people so you don’t have to be terrified alone. It also makes for one wicked Halloween party – or any party for that matter.

The Features

The over-the-top themed suites are definitely the main attraction here. And every room features either a jacuzzi or a hot tub for even more incentive not to venture outside. But if you do make it out, behind the hotel you’ll be treated to views of the White Mountains looming in the distance. There are cozy chairs circled around a firepit that’s lit every evening for cottage backyard vibes.

A grab-and-go style breakfast is included in your stay, with cereal, pastries and all the items needed to build your own breakfast sandwich available in the lobby from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. You can also snack on unlimited popcorn from an old-school machine at any time.

The Location

There’s only one main strip in North Conway and Adventure Suites is on it. Across the road you’ll find local watering hole McGrath's Tavern while outlet shopping, bars and restaurants like the newly opened Barley + Salt are just a five-minute drive down the road.

Adventure Suites is also close to a number of ski hills and attractions like Mount Washington, one of the highest peaks in North America.

Rooms from $250 per night.
